Saturday morning, off I go to walk the dog. We step onto the deck, about ready to go down the stairs and yikes! That part of the deck collapses and down I go. Luckily, Cora was ahead of me, so she was okay. And so was I, amazingly. Three boards let go and I went straight down about three and a half feet.
My first thought was, thank God it wasn’t Charlie. I knew he was going to the transfer station later in the morning and would be carrying stuff. Plus, it was a Ida-sized hole and I landed on my feet in the middle of it. Not a scratch on me. I’m thinking it would’ve been tight for Charlie and he might have gotten scuffed up. And I’m a little challenged in the height department (firmly planted, as we say in this neck of the woods), so I didn’t have far to go.
Charlie felt bad because the deck had been on his list last weekend and he just didn’t get to it. You know how that goes. I’ll let him tell you about it.
This Morning’s Mishap
This morning, I began my day
By banishing my fog
With Maxwell House and Cheerios
While Ida walked the dog
“Charlie!” I heard Ida call
I’m thinkin’, what the heck?
“Come and get me out of here,
I’ve fallen through the deck!”
I was only half surprised
I knew them boards were loose
I’ll get to it this weekend
(That was no excuse)
So I went and fished her out
At least she wasn’t hurt
Her sneakers may have got a little
Scuffed up by the dirt
I couldn’t put it off no more
That was plain to see
The next one fallin’ down that hole
Might be the dog or me!
So I dubbed around a bit
Didn’t take that long
One trip to the hardware store
And look, the hole is gone
What else have I left undone?
Before the next surprise
Take Ida out, ’cause she deserves
A consolation prize
That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
