Come summer, a trip to the Dairy Queen can improve your day no end. That refreshing iced milk can calm you down or cheer you up. It’s a perfect way to celebrate winning a softball game or mend a broken heart.
But here’s the thing. Up north where we live, you have to be careful driving down country roads after dark because of the wildlife. And I’m not talking about the Purdy brothers on their way home from tying one on down to the Brew Ha Ha. I’m refer to animals jay-walking across the road. I mean, they don’t seem to pay any attention whatsoever to the Deer or Moose Crossing signs. We even eliminated the writing and went with a picture, but still, they don’t always stick to the rules.
Just this last week, Charlie was down to the transfer station and he heard a story about this very subject. So what did he do? Write a poem about it, of course.
Peanut Buster Parfait
Ran into Frank at the transfer station
More shook-up than I ever seen
As he told me what happened comin’ home last night
From a visit to the Dairy Queen
“Ka-boom! We hit a deer, that bugger
Just run right out of the wood
The missus an’ me are doin’ fine, don’t worry
But our car got stove up good
“The front end’s trashed, the window got smashed
It’s totaled, that’s what they say
I’m shakin’ still now, I don’t know how
Both of our desserts got through it OK
“When Officer Ed shone his flashlight
I guess he was amazed
To see us lookin’ drained but clutchin’ what remained of our
Peanut Buster Parfaits
“It could have been so much worse,” Frank told me
“Worse, in so many ways
If we hadn’t have had the fortification
Of our Peanut Buster Parfaits, imagine
No Peanut Buster Parfaits!”
That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
