Today is our anniversary, and my sweetheart wrote me a love poem. It’s based on a something that actually happened a few years ago. Seriously, this is a true story
The Tale of the Missing Wedding Ring
Leave it to Ida to not miss a thing
“Charlie,” she asked, “where is your ring?”
Indeed it was missing, I didn’t know
Where it had gone, or how long ago
My ring had decided, for reasons unknown
Perhaps it was time to go off on its own
That ring, I think, had a valid excuse
‘Cause man, it had suffered years of abuse
In the woods, in my shop, doin’ chores in the yard
With gloves on or not, I’d worked the thing hard
Small surprise, then, to see it was gone
We stared at the finger that it wasn’t on
“Well,” Ida said, “I’m glad, for my part,
That the ring, and not you, had its own change of heart”
No! I assured her, my love hasn’t strayed
It’s only my ring that has gone, I’m afraid
This jeweler in Bangor had one that fit fine
A re-tread of sorts, but boy, did it shine!
One day I was turning the compost out back
The stuff at the bottom came up good and black
I turned the earth over, and to my delight
There was my ring, like a star in the night!
Now I got backup, the ring that I found,
Whenever my new one decides to skip town
Isn’t that wonderful? I got a little teary when I read it.
Thanks, Charlie. A lot of water’s gone under the bridge since our first kiss, but you’ll always be my high school sweetheart. As my dad signed every card he ever gave to my mom, “Love always.”
