The poet of Mahoosuc Mills strikes again.
Boots Need Waxing
Boots need waxin’ once a year
‘Specially if you’re hunting deer
Any decent goo will do
“Moose snot” is what we call it, here
It kind of looks like that to us.
To use it, you don’t have to fuss:
Brush your boots off to begin,
Then gob it on and rub it in
Your huntin’ day will not be blotted
If your boots are good and snotted
Mine were not when we set out
And I went on my own to scout
These tracks that started leading me
Around this big, blown-over tree
On down a hill with rocks and such
And through this mess of pucker-brush
Until I crossed, I suppose,
This frozen patch that weren’t so froze
I went in, my feet got wet
Jees! I thought, did I forget
To snot my boots? Stupid me!
You know how wet these woods can be!
Darn it all! Just my luck
‘Twas one long slog back to the truck
So if you’re walkin’ where it’s boggy
Anywhere it’s wet and soggy
Give your boots a shot of goo
Your toes’ll thank you for it, too.
Now, my feeling is if you want some waterproof boots, buy some. You know, ones made of Gor-Tex. But Charlie’s set in his ways. He likes the feel of leather and, truth be told, I think he has good memories of snotting up his boots with his dad. Something they’d do together. Those memories get more and more precious as you get older.
And you know what? As much as I find the whole process smelly, if something where to happen to Charlie, I can just picture myself opening up a jar of moose snot, having a sniff, and remembering my guy.
That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
