It’s been five months since Cora came into our lives, and boy, has she blossomed! She’s such a sweet, smart girl! Cora had a fenced in yard where she lived before, and so with us she had to get used to doing her business on a leash, with Charlie or me watching. That was an adjustment. Because she was a Grand Champion, she’d only been on a leash when she was shown. So when we took her out for a walk, she did a great job of not pulling. But, she didn’t stop and sniff things, you know, like a dog. Instead, she was always looking up at us for direction, just wanting to please. Now, she’s a big sniffer and loves the adventure of her walks and all the interesting sights and smells.
We were told when we got her that Cora didn’t play with toys. But we still had a basket of Scamp’s toys and we put that out to see what happened. She ignored them at first. Now, she loves spreading them out all over the floor. We put them away at night, and the next morning they’re all over the floor again. When she comes in from her walk, Cora pounces on them, picks them up and throws them around. Cracks Charlie and me up, and it does my heart good to see that.
We slowly weaned Cora off her total raw food diet. I mean, she was eating three raw chicken necks for breakfast every day. Ick! We had to pen her up when she had breakfast, so she wouldn’t drag the chicken necks off to one of her beds. Then, I had to spend time disinfecting the floor. No, thank you! Now we have a nice combo going with kibble, wet food, and a little raw food to keep her interested. The raw food is easy to use. It’s frozen nuggets, and we just unfreeze enough for the next meal. And boy, does Cora wolfs that down! Chompa, chompa!
Remember me telling you how bad Scamp was in the car? Well, Cora loves riding in her car seat, quiet and content as can be. She’s great with Dad when we visit him down to Mahoosuc Green, too. Them old folks just go cuckoo for her.
Mostly, Cora just wants affection. She puts her paws on your knees and wants to be hugged and petted. She also likes it when I hold her. She’s like a little monkey the way she wraps her paws around me.
Cora loves me, yes, but not quite as much as she does Charlie. Scamp was like that, too, only I was his main squeeze. Around the time Charlie usually gets home from work, Cora will sit by the door waiting for her guy. And man, does her tail go bonkers when she sees Charlie get out of his truck!
I love having a dog, someone who’s over the moon to see me when I come in the house, even if all I did was go to the mail box. Cora makes me laugh and opens my heart. And kicking back in our Barcalounger love seat watching the tube is all the more cozy with Cora cuddled up between us. How lucky are we, huh?
That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
