On New Year’s Eve day, I had an Aha moment. Yup, I’m giving Oprah a run for her money. I was working down to the A&P, wishing folks “Happy New Year,” like you do. And I thought, How many times am I gonna say “Happy New Year” in the next few weeks? It’s just something you do without thinking, right? Well, what if I put some mojo behind it? What if, when I say “Happy New Year” I do it with intention, as my niece Caitlin says. What if I really wish that person happiness in the new year, and at the same time, for myself, too. Kind of an affirmation (Caitlin, again). “I am going to have a happy new year.” Or even better, “I am having a happy new year.” Just thinking that made me feel good.
Then on New Year’s morning, Charlie shared this little ditty with me. He’d been working on it since our last dumping of the white stuff.
Snowblower
(sung to the tune of “White Christmas”)
I’m dreaming of a snowblower
Oh, one that starts without a fuss
It won’t cough or sputter
Runs smooth as butter
And you won’t have to hear me cuss
I’m dreaming of a snowblower
That won’t need service every year
May your pull cords never go slack
And may all your driveways be black
Isn’t that cute? I thought, I’m starting off the new year being serenaded by the man I love. Lucky me! Another affirmation worth considering. I’m on a roll, folks! Wow, affirmations and intentions are so much more fun than resolutions. Give it a go!
I know times can feel a little bleak right now, but there’s not much we can do about it, right? Except be kind to ourselves and others.
My intentions for 2022: Be open to trying new things. Be here now so I don’t miss those moments of awe. And appreciate, be grateful and say thank you. I know from experience that these things will get me through the good times and the rough patches. I just need to be reminded every now and then. Happy new year, my friends!
That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
