Love Poem

February 21, 2022|Ida's Blog

We’ve been having some wacky weather here in Mahoosuc Mills. A few weeks ago we had a snow storm that turned to icy rain. Then, we had a cold snap which left our driveway looking like Antarctica. Since then, we’ve been on a roller coaster ride of cold snaps and spring-like weather. So, about normal for winter in Maine, though so far, February is looking more like March. Go figure!

Anyhoo, Charlie’s had a run for his money keeping the driveway up to par, making sure we don’t fall and break a hip. Yet, he did find time to write me a love poem. At first glance, I know it doesn’t look like a love poem, but see Charlie shows his love by doing. He’s not big on giving me bouquets of flowers and saying “I love you” all the time. No, he shows he cares by doing chores around the house, repairing things, you know, keeping stuff up to snuff.

When I see Charlie out in the driveway hacking away at that ice, I know that’s his version of giving me a dozen roses, and I love hm all the more for it. And when he comes inside, I make him hot chocolate from scratch, kiss the top of his head, and say “Thank you, honey.”

Ice on the Driveway

Ice on the driveway, two inches thick
Some of it mushy, most of it slick

You walk kind of cautious, out on this stuff
I’ve slipped more than once, that was enough

My rock salt? Didn’t do diddly squat
Had a big bag of it, now I do not

I was hoping to get an assist from the sun
But he hasn’t really been helping us none

Should I start shoveling? Maybe I better
Yeah, before either of us takes a header

So me an’ my shovel, that’s what we’re doin’
Peckin’ away at it, hackin’ and hewin’

I guess I’m progressing, but man, is it slow!
Been at it awhile, with little to show

So let’s cut our losses, whaddaya say?
I think the Bruins are playing today

Guys more than happy to reach for a stick
And hop on the ice when it’s two inches thick!

That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
