Have you noticed? Folks sure are putting up their Christmas decorations early this year. If you follow my blog, you know I have opinions about this: when to put ‘em up and when to take ‘em down. And in normal times, it’s not the middle of November.
I’ve always said, Tom Turkey should have his day; no Xmas decorations until after Thanksgiving. But as my co-worker Kim said to me a couple of weeks ago, “It’s 2020, Ida. No rules apply. I already put up my Christmas tree and have started decorating. Don’t judge! I need a little joy in my life, right now!”
And you know what? She right! Heck, we’ve already re-thought Thanksgiving, so let’s keep going! Charlie and me put up our Christmas decorations on Thanksgiving Day. For real! We’ve never done that before. Usually we wait ‘til the first weekend in December. We had a great time! Even hauled out my grandmother’s aluminum tree with the rotating color wheel. Decorated it with red balls, just like she used to. It makes me so happy looking at that thing. It brings back such great memories. Fear not: we’re going to get a real tree next weekend. Then we’ll have two trees for Christmas. No rules!
Charlie is totally on board, and got so inspired by Kim’s words, he wrote a little ditty.
I Want a Little Joy In My Life
A brand new extension cord
That’s what I bought
What did I do with my knife?
I’m hangin’ the Christmas lights
Up in November
I want a little joy in my life
Might cheer up the neighbors
Them walking by
Might help to cheer up my wife
If I dust off ol’ Santa
And plug him back in
I want a little joy in my life
It seems kind of early
To hang up the wreath
But the world is so full of strife
I’ll set up them reindeer
A-crossing the lawn
I want a little joy in my life
While the ground it is dry
I’ll get out the ladder
With snow, the problems are rife
I’ll surprise everybody
And outline the house
I want a little joy in my life
That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
