The Little Things

December 6, 2021|Ida's Blog

Wahoo! My new electric toothbrush has arrived! My old one had been acting wonky for months. It got harder and harder to turn on. And once it was on, it was hard to turn off. It’s amazing when I think about how long I put up with that. Then, it stopped working altogether. So on Cyber Monday, I ordered a new one. Got a great deal on it, too. But at that point, it didn’t matter; I would have gone to Walgreens and bought one anyways.

The incident reminded of last summer when we got together with my cousins at Claudette and Roger’s camp. We all stayed over a couple of nights. The last morning, my cousin Susan says, “Don’t get me wrong. I just love this place. But, I’m so looking forward to getting home to my electric toothbrush!” I knew just what she meant. Once you graduate from acoustic to electric, there’s no going back!

All this sounds kinda silly and dull, I know. But I’ll bet you feel the same way. Enjoying the little things can make a big difference in our day to day goings on. It’s real easy to lose track of that during this whole holiday business. Remember last year, when we had to simplify ‘cause of Covid? I mean, we didn’t have a choice, did we? I gotta admit, I sure missed some of the social stuff, but there was a part of me that enjoyed dialing it down a notch, too.

And you know what? The lights seemed brighter. Folks at the A&P seemed more relaxed, and when they said “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” to you, it might have been my imagination, but it seemed to genuinely mean it.

This year’s a little different, of course. And yes, we kinda want to make up for hunkering down last year. But before we get too crazy with it, ask yourself, “What did I miss last year?” More importantly, “What didn’t I miss?” Maybe it doesn’t have to be business as usual, running around frantic to get things done. We have a chance to take a fresh look at how we celebrate the holidays. Let’s not squander this opportunity.

So don’t get too crazy. Take time to stop and enjoy the little things. That’s my motto this year. Now, I’m going to go fire up my new toothbrush and get brushing! Whatever you celebrate, have a happy!

That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
