Two Ships Passing in the Night

Two Ships Passing in the Night

March 6, 2023|Ida's Blog

Charlie and me have never really been great sleepers, and that certainly hasn’t improved with age. I usually wake up every couple of hours. I get up to pee and go right back to sleep, most of the time. Unless I start thinking, of course. A few nights ago, I slept for three straight hours. I got so excited about it, I had a hard time getting back to sleep. Luckily, I’m a good napper.

Charlie’s the same. He doesn’t seem to pee all that much during the day, but he makes up for it at night. Here’s his latest.

Hardly Slept At All Last Night

Hardly slept at all last night
Bedtime was a blur
Ida’s twitchin’ didn’t help
Can’t blame it all on her

Or my Pabst Blue Ribbon
Or that movie on TV
How many times did both of us
Get up to take a pee?

Snowplow rumbled down the street
With glaring headlight beam
Then, just as we were nodding off,
The dog began to dream

With little yelps and growls, she was
Scratchin’ like to run
“Hey!” I yelled, “Get back to sleep!
You’re having too much fun”

I checked the clock and it was three
I’d hardly slept a wink
Rolled over on my other side
And I began to think

About those guys that they let go
Down at the mill last week
Ernie, Joe and Paul, they all
Are back out on the street

The next time there’s a layoff, well,
I’m sure it will be me
But at this ripe old age, perhaps
I’d just as soon be free

To take it down a notch
Life’s short for goodness sake!
I’ll punch the clock by fishin’
From my bob house on the lake

Sittin’ there, without a care
I’ll catch a perch or three
And I’ll be thinking to myself
Ain’t this the place to be?

Why do all the good dreams
Always tend to end abrupt?
My wrist, it fell asleep on me
And that’s what woke me up

That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
