As I talked about in my blog from a while back, my dad finds that one of the hardest parts of being in Mahoosuc Green (our senior living facility here in Mahoosuc Mills) is that the women won’t leave the men alone. Dad had a real bee in his bonnet about this when we visited him on Sunday. So much so, it inspired Charlie to write a poem.
Down to The Home
Sunday, we went and we saw Ida’s dad
Down to the Home, and though he was glad
One little matter did not make him cheerful
Boy, did we ever get us an earful!
“Why,” he asked, “do women insist
On taking things over? They cannot resist!
Whatever us fellas are doing, I guess,
To them it just looks like we’re makin’ a mess
“Yup, I think they’ve made the decision
That what we need most is good supervision
They hear of our meetings, and what’s their reaction?
How do us gals get in on the action!
“First was our men’s group, goin’ OK,
They wanted to join, but we said, ‘no way!’
They’d come to our session, want to be heard,
And we would be lucky to get in a word!
“Next is our cribbage, Tuesday at two
I’m thinking, don’t you got knittin’ to do?
Or flower arrangin’, something like that?
‘Cause cribbage is what us guys are good at
“We’ll play with the gals, if they’re OK,
But these ladies don’t even know how to play!”
Ida goes, “Dad, you could be a trend setter
By teaching these widows how to play better!”
“Ida,” he says, “convince me, you won’t
Either you know how to play or you don’t.”
“OK, OK, but give it a thought.
It could be the bait that gets the fish caught!”
“Ida,” he laughs, “do you think I’m fishin’?”
“What fella isn’t?” was Ida’s suspicion
“Teach ‘em to play, that’s what you do,
And next thing you know, they’ll be cookin’ you stew!”
That’s it for now. Catch you on the flip side!
